How Can We Help?

In the 1930s and 40s, which some of you may remember first-hand, dairying was widely practiced in San Mateo County. With 17, 533 livestock and 77,400 people, every 5th person had a head! Fast forward to today. We live in a rapidly growing metropolis of 769,000 with tech, bio tech, venture capital, a thriving service sector, and small businesses we cherish.

Despite living in a fast-paced place, I imagine many of us are still adjusting to how much our lives have changed over just the past two weeks. Constants remain, however. We are still lucky to live and work in the City of Good Living (and neighboring towns) and we’re still asking each other “Got Milk?”

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Spontaneous goodwill. That’s how this “movement” started. So many people were offering to help others on Nextdoor that it seemed these kindnesses would get lost amongst applauding comments from others.

So, in less than a week, we’ve gone from individual raised hands to a group of over 75 organized volunteers (and counting). Along the way we garnered referrals from Councilman Mark Olbert, specialized skills (Jen Ha, Michael Campbell, Ron Piovesan), backing from the Community Foundation of San Carlos, with a lot of support from board President Jessica Yang, and a strong backbone from the extremely hard-working staff of the City of San Carlos and County of San Mateo call center and other operations teams.
