COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF SAN CARLOS ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF RACIAL JUSTICE POSTER CONTEST

San Carlos, CA. April 14, 2021 - The Community Foundation of San Carlos announced the winners of their inaugural poster contest on March 21 to coincide with the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination, as recognized by the United Nations. The community was invited to apply in age categories ranging from kindergarten through adult. Each winner received a gift certificate for art supplies as well as chose a racial justice-focused nonprofit to receive a $500 donation from the Foundation. Presentations were made to the winners by the foundation board members.

Foundation Board Chair Jessica Yang remarked:

“What was surprising and heartening was the large influx of entries from the younger categories. Their passion and attention to Racial Justice gives me great hope for a more aware and inclusive future”

The winner of the high school competition, Sequoia 9th grader Hannah Esme Delizo described the inspiration for her artwork There is Always Light (A Tribute to Amanda Gorman):

"Amanda Gorman's speech during President Biden and Vice-President Harris' inauguration inspired me. It takes a lot of courage to deliver a speech to an entire country where almost half didn't really want to hear it. Amanda's speech made me feel empowered and hopeful as a person of color."

Hannah directed her donation to the Bay Area Community Health Advisory Committee (BACHAC), where she and her family are frequent volunteers.

As you can imagine BACHAC goes through a lot of PPE at our weekly test site. It costs about $1.50 per bag so the donation from the Community Foundation of San Carlos will enable BACHAC to make and give out over 330 PPE bags, which will last about 4-5 weeks,- responded BACHAC Executive Director Lisa Tealer.

Winning posters will be displayed on the foundation website, social media and in downtown San Carlos businesses. Winners in other categories are as follows:

K-4th grade:  Maya Olsen, third grader at San Carlos Charter

San Carlos Planning Commission approves new aviation hangers

While the agreement has not been officially formalized, the San Carlos Community Foundation is in conversation with developers to be the main leaseholder. Once finalized, the organization would then have the authority to sublease the space to other nonprofits in the area. The leasing agreement would grant the organization access to a conference space at least 20 times a year with potential of up to 40 times depending on scheduling.

“I like the idea of the San Carlos foundation having a physical way of bringing the leadership they intend to bring to our local nonprofit community. That’ll be a good asset of theirs at least for 10 years and hopefully that partnership remains positive and doesn’t have to end at 10 years,” said Commissioner John Dugan.
