Volunteer: Samaritan House
As the largest food distribution agency in San Mateo County, Samaritan House provides services and resources to over 14,000 low-income and homeless county residents. Their free services include:
shelter and housing assistance;
medical and dental clinics;
clothes for children;
personalized case management and much more.
Current Situation
On April 9th, 241 families went to Samaritan House, needing food and help with rent. Already, they’ve seen a dramatic surge in demand for services - 550 NEW people each week! The numbers will continue to grow as COVID-19 spreads and many folks go longer and longer without a paycheck.
Are You…
Healthy and not part of an at-risk group?
Able to commit to a weekly shift (or more!) for at least a month?
Note: If this is too big a commitment, you can still apply, but preference will be give to people who can help more regularly.
Free any weekday? Services offered on weekends but volunteers primarily needed for weekdays.
How You Can Help
Grocery Rescue: 8am-10am - pickup from vendors and bring food to Samaritan House
Food Services Support: 8:30-12 and 1-4 shifts - Volunteers split into two groups: (1) Help with their food distribution drive through, (2) Food prep in the kitchen (weekdays is real need)
Mobile meals: pickup food at Samaritan House between 3:30 and 4:30 and then deliver it to a specified route of typically 1 - 1 1/2 hours (mostly in San Mateo / Redwood City)
What you Need
A car: larger-sized vehicles are best but not essential
A mask (please bring your own) - gloves if you have them (or they can provide)
A great attitude
