Screening of "Good Trouble" - presented by Vera Institute of Justice

Screening Event by Vera Institute of Justice

Among the many losses of the last few months was that of civil rights icon and U.S. Congressman John Lewis. Next week, Vera is proud to present a virtual screening of the recently released film Good Trouble, an intimate account of Lewis’s life, legacy, and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the civil rights movement to a legislative powerhouse.

The screening will take place on Thursday, September 24, beginning at 7:00pm Eastern | 4:00PM Pacific, and will be immediately followed by a virtual fireside chat with Vera’s President Nick Turner and Debo Adegbile. Debo serves as Vice Chair of Vera's Board of Trustees, Partner at the law firm WilmerHale, and Commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (he was appointed to that position by President Obama in 2016).

A towering yet humble figure in American history, Congressman Lewis, the son of a poor farming family in Alabama's Black Belt, became a beacon of hope, love, and optimism. He encouraged us to keep our eyes on the prize: a brighter, better, and more just future. One of Dr. Martin Luther King's closest allies, Lewis was among the very first of the Freedom Riders, a founder of SNCC, and a man who was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge to what he thought would be his death. He served in Congress, where he was a voice of uncommon, uncompromising decency and fearlessness. Lewis called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing at the age of 80 on July 17, 2020.

I hope you will join us for our screening of Good Trouble and Nick and Debo's conversation by registering here

Sincerely,

Kenya
