What motivates you to take this challenge?

  • “Recent experience at White Oaks Movie Night”

  • “I’m a minority in this community and want to foster change”

  • “As I've lived around the world, I've experienced a wide range of cultures. From moderate, and open-minded to indeed racist in other parts of the world. Psychologist talk about "in-ground / out-group bias", which appears to be at the heart of racism, sexism and other forms of hatred or distrust. Racism is far from a phenomenon from white people, but to the contrary, racism exist all around the world in all directions. The more people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives get to know each other, then less racism and other prejudice exists. Teachers and parents, stop teaching in-group/out-group bias. Don't tell your children that people from the "other" political party, religion, race, gender, etc are bad. You know that this is happening in San Carlos both in the schools and in homes daily (mostly regarding political parties, I'd hypothesize.)”

  • “Want my kids’ generation to have less racism”

  • “To learn how I can move the needle at home, in my community and at my work.”

  • “I'm hoping to strengthen my understanding and awareness of how various conscious and subconscious biases (i.e. racism, classism) affect our decisions and actions as a community. I've always been interested in this work; and now that I have children, I'd like to be better equipped to discuss these matters with them and raise them in ways that don't perpetuate harmful behaviors and views.”

  • “Racial issues and social injustice are difficult issues to discuss with others. There is always an opportunity to become a better person. 21 days will give me a chance to pause, listen, learn and reflect.”

  • “Racial equity and antiracism is very important to me. I want to do whatever I can to make San Carlos a better place to live for everyone and I believe antiracism training is crucial to make this happen.”

  • “I hear about too many social injustices and usually I don't know what to do about them. I also missed the Sacred Ground program offered in the church community, although I was interested in it.”

  • “In the last few years, I turned my despair and disgust into action and committed to being actively antiracist. Education is critical to understanding the world and how to change it.”

  • “I live in San Francisco and recently began working in San Carlos. I am interested in navigating my new workplace and the different racial demographics in this context.”

  • “I want to learn more about the San Carlos Community, to better understand inequality, implicit bias and a desire to always strive to do better and to be better.”

  • “I am a woman of color working in San Carlos and am curious to see what the community is doing in terms of equity.”

  • “I want to rise to the challenge of being aware and uplifting those who do not have equity or privilege.”

  • “Be a better ally and learn how to better use my own privilege to help others in the community”

  • “Seeing how much our culture has changed...and how far we still have to go.”

  • “Doing this with my church group, having like minded people to talk with”

  • “I hope to help build a community/society with less social/racial bias.”

  • “I want to take a more active role in anti racism and social justice”

  • “better understanding my privilege and what to do moving forward”

  • “Making the future more inclusive and accepting for our youth”

  • “This is part of an important community conversation.”

  • “I want & need to educate myself more on these topics”

  • “continued learning and to share with my Rotary club”

  • “Always more to learn about being anti racist”

  • “to increase my awareness”

  • “I am a DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging) advocate.”

  • “I hear about too many social injustices and usually I don't know what to do about them. I also missed the Sacred Ground program offered in the church community, although I was interested in it.”

  • “These are important issues and I want to do whatever I can to help. I also want to demonstrate to the Community Foundation that there is an appetite for these types of things.”

  • “I am a second year MSW looking for a community based anti-racism experience in my community!”

  • “My work is centered on getting more capital in the hands of diverse entrepreneurs and dismantling systemic bias in venture capital, so I can always learn more!”

  • “Epiphany's Leadership”

  • “Prior personal work in the area of anti-racism through Episcopal Church”

  • “continue my commitment to work for social justice”

  • “Desire to learn more about racial justice issues in our communities and to work with others on improving life for all in the area.”

  • “To keep social justice and racial equity top of mind for myself and my colleagues”

  • “This is an extension to the Sacred Ground program sponsored by our Church.”

  • “I’ve been studying anti racism for a couple of years now. I now know how much I did not know and have been actively learning more.”

  • “passionate about equity and always continuing to learn”

  • “This is a topic that is very important to me.”

  • “As a classroom teacher, it seems imperative I keep up with issues of equity and increase my own engagement with relevant issues.”

  • “Sustained interest in racial and social equity in our community and beyond. We have to be the change we want to see in the world.”

  • “I continue to take opportunities for both my personal and professional growth, and how I can guide my organization as well as contribute to change.”

  • “I have built and led diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies and programs for 3 different companies and want to share my knowledge and expertise where I can, along with continuing to learn more about this space.”

  • “Being new to San Carlos, I want to create synergy between my past professional work in DEI with my new neighborhood.”

  • “Desire to learn more about myself and become a better citizen”

  • “Check inner compass”

  • “Exploring my own unintentional biases and find ways to mitigate them”

  • “I have been working in environmental justice for many years and I'm excited to talk to my parents (San Carlos residents) about these topics! Thank you for this offering.”

  • “I was thrilled when I learned of this challenge today, sorry to join late! These issues matter a great deal to me and I very much appreciate this opportunity to be more deeply informed.”

  • “Desire to become a more engaged, thoughtful, and inclusive community member.”

  • “I had wanted to do this more than a year ago, but the timing wasn't good for me. I look forward to a dedicated daily focus on equity and racism to help me continue to make progress in my personal journey.”

  • ”As a public educator, it’s my duty to work towards supporting awareness for this initiative in order to build a more diverse and accepting community. I feel we are stronger when we know how much we have in common and how we can unify our community with inclusion and acceptance of everyone.”

  • ”Desire to be more aware of my unconscious bias and help create equity in my community.”
